Kara Bocek pag.7
(click on the above image for larger view)
Hello Pulp friends :)
If you thought that our little trip to Constantinople was going to be a Travelocity commercial, well you were wrong. As you can see in today's episode, these cats are not kidding.
And they have claws! ;)
Hope you enjoy the show and I will see you for the date next week :)
Have a wonderful Pulp Sunday everyone!
Cheers,
Francesco

The Rocketeer in "One Down, Next Up"
Here's a Rocketeer 'thing I did (in between pages here and there since Monday) for this week theme at Comic Twart (you should check the other awesome entries -outstanding work from everyone!)
When I heard about the topic for this week, last Friday, I had 3 ideas popping up in my head. I went with the "quickest" one, which was a remake of an old composition I did a few years ago and never got around finishing it. You can see the "starting" pencils here, along with my memories of the late Dave Stevens (I had the honor to meet him and chat with him years ago in SD with the good friend and super talented Jim Steranko - speaking of hanging out with the "cool kids").
Click on the above image for viewing the whole illo in its cinemascopic entirety :)
I may tackle the other two ideas when I get some spare time.
Cheers,
Francesco

The Green Hornet Is Coming!
Hello Pulp Friends,
because i have been out of town this weekend for the Charlotte MiniCon (again many thanks to Shelton Drum, Linda, Dustin and everyone else for inviting me and my wife at the show and for gifting us such a lovely time :)) I haven't had time to work on a new Kara Bocek page (which will be back next week).
I did have time, though, to do this little teaser illo to finally make a big annoucement (well, it's big for me being the pulp fan you all know): I was asked by Dynamite and Matt Wagner to be part of the new pulp adventures of Green Hornet Year One, which will be on the shelves this April. While I am not drawing the book (the very talented Aaron Campbell is the artist for the title) I will be coloring it and will be providing alternate covers starting from issue 2 (with Matt's covers, just like we have done on Zorro).
Matt and Dynamite were very happy with my colors on Zorro so they asked me if I was willing to color the GH book, and since I am a big fan of the Green Hornet I couldn't pass on the chance to be involved with such cool project (I have seen the pages and read the script and it IS a cool project).
Can't show the interiors colored yet or the covers yet, so I did the above illo this afternoon to go with the annoucement.
I will make sure to share more as soon as I can (very excited :))
Have a great Pulp Sunday evening everyone :)
Cheers,
Francesco

Zorro Salutes
(click on the image for bigger size)
Hello Pulp Friends,
I recently joined a group of fellow artists who jam weekly on a specific character. The blog is Comic Twart (Twitter Art) and the first week topic/character was (HA!) Zorro! Of course I felt like I was playing in my own backyard ;)
With issue 19 (coming out later this month) and issue 20 (coming in late Feb) wrapping up my third arc (and second run) on Zorro, I decided to partecipate to the jam with one of the pages from issue 20 that just came out from the oven. It seemed to fit the ending of the arc (even if that is NOT the last page of the issue ;)) with a nice shot of Zorro saluting and Tornado rearing :)
Please check Comic Twart for more zorros from some talented people.
Also please come by and say hi if you are gonna be in Charlotte and surroundings this coming Saturday: I will be at the Charlotte MiniCon with goodies and always a big smile :D See you there!
Cheers,
Francesco

Kara Bocek pag.6
(click on the above image for larger view)
Hello Pulp friends :)
Holy crap, this page was supposed to be a walk in the park, you know, two guys having a chat, that's all.
But then I thought to play a bit with the layout (and Aziz's Antiques Shop, the Safrara) and have... well see it for yourself since it's done and posted ;)
Definitely one of the Kara Bocek pages that took me longer to do. I just hope you guys dig it. Lemme know :)
Have a Pulp Sunday (evening), everyone!
Cheers,
Francesco

Holmes: A Study In Sepia
Hello Pulp Friends,
today I am sharing a little tribute to the Great Detective, based off this (below) pencil sketch I did during the holidays while visiting the in-laws.
I decided to bring it to the inkwash stage and start to build the studio around him. Finally added some digital colors to get the final result you can see on top.
Stay tuned in the next days for more Holmes and Mignola's Baltimore :)
Cheers,
Francesco

Kara Bocek pag.5
Hello Pulp friends :)
After the holiday (and Internet!!!) break, we are back to our regular transmissions with a new Kara Bocek page and some really goon news (I hope).
The good news is: I decided to make Kara Bocek a full Black Beetle tale, a one-shot, if you wish, instead of a short holiday story. That means you are going to get 20-something page of this story, once or twice a week.
Wait! That means I have to draw an extra page or two a week!!! ARGH! ;)
I will figure it out somehow. Meanwhile hope you guys enjoy page 5 here (click on the above image for iMax view :)), and, as usual, hit me back with love or hate. Lemme hear from you :)
Have a Pulp Sunday (evening), everyone!
Cheers,
Francesco

"King Creole" (1958)
Hello, Pulp Friends,
to tribute the 75th birthday of the man who defined (and maybe created) the word "rockstar", I decided this morning to do a little noir movie poster of one of my favorite Elvis Presley's movies, "King Creole", from 1958.
I love this movie not just becuase of Elvis' starring, but also because of the settings (New Orleans, I city and its music I dearly love), the B/W noir feel of it, and the Casablanca director Michael Curtiz.
Click on the image for bigger poster.
To add to the celebrations, on my sketchblog I also posted a commission from (ommy) 5 ys ago.
Happy Birthday, Elvis :)
Cheers,
Francesco

Some Z and some News
Hello Pulp Friends,
sorry for the interruption of transmission in this past week but I have been without Internet service since Dec 30th (I guess I can say since last year ;)) and finally got the technical issue resolved yesterday (YAY!) :)
I used the the "down time" to wrap up an issue of Zorro and at the same time I have been invited by the supersweet folks (Shelton, Dustin and friends) of Heroes Aren't Hard to FInd to be featured guest at their one day show, the Charlotte Mini Con, on the 23rd of this month. If you are in the area, please stop by and say hi (I might have some Kara Bocek movie posters/prints too ;))
So here's the Zorro back cover for the upcoming issue 19 that teases about issue 20 (conclusion of the third arc) and below the mini poster I did for let you know about the Charlotte mini con. You can go here for more details and for downloading a pdf flyer, if needed. As you can see, our Black Beetle will be helping in promoting the show :)
I will be right back with more pulpy stuff soon, including Sherlock Holmes and, of course, the next pages of Black Beetle's Kara Bocek :)
I am planning to make the 2010 even pulpier than 2009 here @ Pulp SUnday: stay tuned, everyone! :D
Cheers,
Francesco
